My wife and I just watched "Confessions of a Shopaholic" (yeah, it's a chick flick, but I'm okay with that). The main character, Rebecca, has a major problem with buying things. The mere mention of the word"SALE" sets her off into a frenzy. All of her credit cards are at their limits. She confesses at one point in the movie that the moment when she swipes the card at the store, she feels happy, but then the happy fades and she needs to do it again.
If we are honest, we all have a little bit of Rebecca in us. It may not be with shopping; It may be prestige, sports, social networking, relationships, etc, but often something tempts us away from the lasting satisfaction that only God can give. Jesus told the woman at the well that the water he gives will completely quench her thirst.
What does it take to allow God to satisfy these desires? How to we pull away from those things that vie for our affections? Training. Daily, through spiritual disciplines like fasting, solitude, prayer, meditation, lectio divina (sacred reading), we can fill our hearts with the "good stuff" of God so that the "bad stuff" has no room - in fact, the "bad stuff" can become repulsive. For more on spiritual disciplines Richard Foster's book Celebration of Discipline and Dallas Willard's The Spirit of the Disciplines are great reads.
